FARTHER ALONG

Farther Along was the third album that Spirit released through Mercury Records. Though Jay Ferguson was missing from the lineup, it is generally considered to be their first "reunion" album.
Out of the four albums that Spirit recorded for Mercury in the mid-70s, this one is the least influenced by Randy California's time in Hawaii. However, it isn't too dissimilar from the previous two albums in that regard, though the song structures are very tight throughout. Consequently, it also bears more than a passing resemblance to Clear at times, probably because of John Locke's presence in the group. It is particularly cherished by fans of that album. The album also includes a notable version of Nature's Way, which is arranged for a chamber orchestra.

SWEETMEAT 95

I thought it was time to revisit the music deemed as Klassic on the radio station KSHE out of St. Louis. here's some history of "Sweetmeat"

The station mascot is a sunglasses-and-headphones-wearing pig named "Sweetmeat," the likeness of which originally appeared on the cover of Blodwyn Pig's 1969 album 'Ahead Rings Out'.
Like the pig pictured on the LP cover, Sweetmeat first appeared with a joint in his mouth. This "controversial" detail disappeared in the early '80s in favor of an updated, cartoon "rocker" pig. Originally, Sweetmeat was a female. At one point, a contest was held, which allowed listeners to name her children, which there were two of, a male and a female,  Then, sometime in the '80s (More than likely at the same time the "Rocker" pig image was put into place), Sweetmeat suddenly became a male character. In recent years, the station has returned to using the original image, along with the original KSHE-95 text logo.

THE THIRTEENTH DREAM

The European cover of The Thirteenth Dream

The U.S. cover version

Although Spirit achieved only moderate commercial success in its original configuration from 1968 to 1971, its music turned out to be influential and perennially popular; its last album, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus, went gold six years after it was released. That appeal was reinforced by the success of the individual members. While guitarist Randy California and Ed Cassidy continued to lead changing lineups under the Spirit banner, lead singer Jay Ferguson and bassist Mark Andes formed Jo Jo Gunne, after which Ferguson went solo and Andes formed Firefall, before joining Heart, and keyboardist John Locke played with Hawkwind, among others. Prior commitments as much as anything else kept the original quintet from re-forming in any sustained manner. But Spirit of '84 (known as The Thirteenth Dream outside the U.S.) was the closest they came, a get-together recorded live in the studio during late 1982 and given major-label release in 1984. Augmented by 13 guest musicians, Spirit ran through seven of their old numbers and added three new songs. Two of the new ones were written by Ferguson, and they were more in his solo style (and in the mold of early-'80s synthesizer-heavy pop/rock) than that of the band. Leadoff track "Black Satin Nights," in particular, had the potential to be a hit, had it been released as a single and promoted. In contrast, California, the other leading songwriter in the band, co-wrote "All Over the World," an overt paean to the '60s peace-and-love worldview. Had the two created an album's worth of material, perhaps with some creative participation from Locke, the result might have been a collection that at least updated the Spirit sound for the '80s. As it was, the album was dominated by the remakes, which, not surprisingly, were inferior to the original recordings, but which served to remind listeners how good those recordings had been. The disc concluded with a seven-and-a-half-minute rendition of Spirit's sole Top 40 hit, "I Got a Line On You," featuring a guitar army that included heavy hitters like Bob Welch and Jeff Baxter. It had the feel of a victory lap, but for a band that never quite won the prize in the first place. Not surprisingly, Spirit of '84 proved to be a one-off reunion, after which the band members went back to their usual occupations.

ROCKY AND SOME CLOSE FRIENDS

San Francisco rock singer/songwriter - who should have done way better. Catchy tunes with a rockin' feeling - that might describe his music. The voice reminding of Bruce Springsteen at times. All that talent must have been the reason why many famous Bay Area artists joined Rocky Sullivan on his albums.

Rocky Sullivan was born as Anthony Galante in New York in 1948 and that's also the place where he joined his first bands. He started with the doo wop group 'The Visuals' and then went on to play with 'The Braid'. Further information regarding these bands can be found in an interview with Rocky (link underneath) and the discography. When Rocky came to San Francisco he had not only changed his name but also started his solo career and recorded several albums.

"Illegal Entry" (1980), a nice enough album which includes the tasty "Everybodies Got A Price", features among others, Nicky Hopkins, Greg Douglass, John Cipollina and Mario Cipollina. The songs on this album were recorded even before Rocky had a record deal during several sessions in 1978 (March, July and October) at the Automat, San Francisco. Except two songs, which were written by John Cipollina, Rocky wrote all songs himself.
"Back Up Girl" and "Roxy" had already been released before on San Fransico's Jupiter Records compilation City Lights in 1979. Which also featured the first appearance by Tommy Tutone.

Rocky Sullivan passed away at the age of 59 on November 25, 2007. He will be missed by fans, friends and family.
Hopefully Rocky's music will be re-released sometime in the future as all his wonderful recordings are currently out of print.

A SPIRIT OF THREE

After the high experimentation of 1975's double LP Spirit of '76 comes a single album from that same year, and, next to 1990's Tent of Miracles, it is the most focused of the Spirit trio albums as led by Randy California. Barry Keene is again the bassist prior to Mark Andes coming to the party for the Farther Along semi-reunion in 1976. All of side one works extremely well, from "Holy Man" to "Family" and everything in between. The tunes have more pop substance than some of California's other wandering minstrel etchings, and the band sounds more full than the three-piece unit that they declare on the album jacket. Rather than re-create more songs that Jimi Hendrix covered, which was becoming a trend on Spirit outings, California and company do a mesmerizing version of the Beatles'"Yesterday" that clocks in at one minute, 58 seconds. "Magic Fairy Princess" is a good title to lead off side two, as it is a very magical side. California's production work is top notch, sounding not unlike John Lennon's "Mind Games," with much high end on the drums and all sorts of density to the mix. As Spirit of '76 is one of this pared-down band's most satisfying gambles, Son of Spirit brings it together -- it's the kind of chapter to the story that Ian Anderson would develop for Jethro Tull, very musical, and shying from the commercial side of things. Definitely for the fans, and for those hardcore Spirit fans who are out there, the acoustics and precise vocals are a treat. "Circle" is a superb work of art and a beautiful statement. As Tent of Miracles combines the old format of the original group within the three-piece ensemble, Son of Spirit is very much like a successful spinoff à la Jo Jo Gunne or Firefall. Had they gone out on the road booked as Son of Spirit, it may have opened doors closed by the perception of the group being on the oldies/classic rock circuit. This album is refreshingly new, exciting, and a direction that deserved far more attention than it received.

Son of Spirit was the second album that Spirit released through Mercury Records. It was released in October 1975. Unlike Spirit of '76, however, it did not make the national charts.

Though some of the album's tracks were from the same sessions that produced Spirit of '76, it also features several Randy California solo demos that have been augmented by a rhythm machine.

MIRACLE THREE

Randy California – Guitars, vocals, bass
Ed Cassidy – Drums, percussion
Mike Nile – Bass, vocals

This is one of the best Spirit albums by the trio version of the act, the Randy California/Ed Cassidy ensemble which carried on with the name. This time the third member is bassist Mike Nile, and the album works because Nile gets to be more than a sideman, he actually contributes as the original group did, with results that are most satisfying. Tent of Miracles is a wonderful album title, and the disc opens with Ed Cassidy's jungle drumbeat instrumental "Borderline," typical of the band's bold 1990s sound. More serious and refined than the Mercury records releases in the mid-'70s, decades on the road touring, along with having those highly experimental albums behind them, make this a very musical and mature chapter. "Zandu" is your Randy California "Kahauna Dream"-style exotic guitar with its mechanical metallic stomp, a song similar to but lighter than Roxy Music's "Manifesto." California's co-write with stepdad Ed Cassidy, "Stuttgart Says Good-bye," is "Eight Miles High" gone tribal and expands the theme. This 1990 album has an inadvertent concept which is a delight to the legion of Spirit fans who cared enough to seek it out. The title track is an eerie "I Want Candy" redux with the real stunner being that it is a Mike Nile original, a major contribution from a Spirit member not originally part of the group. The almost six minutes mesmerize and are everything Spirit was ever about. It follows in the dreamy quagmire that is "Stuttgart Says Good-Bye" and the earlier "Love From Here" style. "Love From Here" has elements of the later 1994 track "One By One," a Randy California original which outdoes the excellent "Love From Here," providing insight that the late singer/songwriter was in a groove and in a good creative state, despite lack of major label support for his latter-day efforts. The band actually becoming a full unit with serious contributions from the bass player adds a cohesion missing from some of the '70s work. Mike Nile's originals not only keep pace with Randy California, they seem to give Randy and this version of the band focus. The final of the dozen songs, Nile's "Deep in This Land" holds to the theme and sound of the title track, as well as Nile's other originals, "Old Black Magic,""Ship of Fools," and the tune all three bandmembers composed, "Imaginary Mask.""Tent of Miracles" holds many secrets and is that extension of The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus that California was seeking for so many years.
Tent of Miracles is the thirteenth studio album by Spirit

TEXAS AUGIE

Keyboard player and multi-instrumentalist Augie Meyers co-founded the Sir Douglas Quintet with his pal Doug Sahm, rising from regional to national fame in the late 1960s. They scored modest Top Forty hits with songs such as "She's About A Mover" and "Mendocino," bringing a funky Tex-Mex groove into the world of hippie-era rock'n'roll, with Meyers' buoyant organ and piano playing giving the band its distinctive sound. At the peak of its fame, the Quintet moved to California, but broke up in 1973 with Meyers and Sahm coming back to Earth (and Texas) just in time to preside over the Lone Star indie-outlaw scene. They re-formed and perpetually mutated the band for years to come, working together on countless records, as well as projects with other roots-music artists. In the 1990s they teamed up with country star Freddy Fender and conjunto accordionist Flaco Jimenez to form the commercially potent Texas Tornados. Meyers also released numerous solo albums on his own indie labels.

I have always been a fan of the original music that was created in the first of the psychedelic years of 1965-1968. The original nuggets LP issued in 75 or so was a great sampling of my kind of music. I went on to buy the next wave of nugget LP's that were issued.  Rhino did a great job of finding a vast collection of rare and popular garage\psychedelic music even more with it's box set on cd. However I have taken it a step further here by putting together some more of my favorites. I have intentions of putting a couple more comps as time goes by. Music from MY time as a young man and I believe it to be one of the most creative in musical history. Punk, garage, Psychedelic OH MY!

OPEN AIR ROCK CIRCUS 1970

After posting the Chuck Berry photo it got me to thinking about the actual event and who played that day. Other than Mr Berry I could only recall 2 other acts on the bill that day. One was Steamhammer (who were quite popular in Germany at that time.) the other was Black Sabbath in one of their early dates. In reviewing the top photo the musician to the right on stage has on orange pants. The drummer is in the center. I believe this indeed was BS and they opened on that day. I cannot remember too much about the day but after searching the internet I stumbled across a video of BS on Sun June 21.1070  at Radstadion Frankfurt Germany In reviewing the video I found it to be the exact date and performance that I had seen that day, Ozzie is in orange pants and as the video rolls you can see that it is indeed the venue that I had attended

I searched again for that days artist roster and found confirmation that BS and Steamhammer played that day along with . Deep Purple. Edgar Broughton and info on the festival makes a claim that Uriah Heep was also on the bill. It is noted that Chuck Berry did not play as he was cancelled by the promoters for trying to blackmail them for more money Being totally honest with you my memory of the day is very limited as these photos are  my only recollection.  I do remember it was a good time.and so very long ago!

PAUL KANTNER

It's time we walked away
Set me free
I must move away
Leave you be...
Time's been good to us, my friend
Wait and see how it will end
We come and go as we please...
We come and go as we please...
That's how it must be

Here in crystal chandelier, I'm home
Too many days, I've left unstoned
If you doubt my happiness
What full pleasure feels in the Sun
Ah, don't you know I'm runnin' home...
Don't you know I'm runnin' home...
To a place to you unknown?

I take great peace in your sitting there
Searching for myself, I find a place there
I see the people of the world
Where they are and what they could be...

I can but dance behind your smile...
I can but dance behind your smile...

You were the world to me for a while

D.C.B.A.-25

This is a song from The Jefferson Airplane's album Surrealistic Pillow. It was written by Paul Kantner of The Jefferson Airplane. Oddly the only Kantner song on that LP

I remember reading someplace that "DCBA-25" referred to the song's chord progression.

You will notice it from the first when you listen to it, and it is repeated throughout the song. It is generally assumed that this chord progression (D-C-B-A) gave rise to the name of the song.

It has also been surmised that '-25' was added to the title of the song to make a reference to the chemical LSD-25, which we know is a hallucinogenic drug Acid.

As for the lyrics of the song, One can assume that at some stage Paul was leaving someone or someplace, and wanted to leave a small eulogy to that parting.

Some would imagine that this song would also be perfect for background music if you were actually taking Acid, as it seems to have that peaceful and loving atmosphere which is most desirable when your mind is being stimulated beyond anything it has so far experienced.

By the way, many interpret the line "too many days I've left unstoned" differently from the usual interpretation of "too many days that I didn't get stoned". I think this line is a reference to the phrase "stones left unturned". I think Paul is saying that there are many days which he did not investigate life as fully as he could have.

I put together some of Paul's songs. Some of them are known but I tried to stay away from the basic Airplane>Starship > I am sure that you will hear many of those over the next week or so . Here are 24 from Paul's works as my tribute to  a legend.

Just a moment to recognize Signe Toly Anderson who passed on the same day as  Paul' For many of us we can actually remember the day this lady fronted the band before the arrival of Grace.  I can vividly remember( as a teenager) going to one of the big department stores in downtown St Louis and picking up the "TakesOff " lp. Signe will always be a part of Jefferson Airplane for me. I feel like so many of the great musicians of my era are leaving us and it does make one feel old.

Douglas Wayne Sahm (November 6, 1941 – November 18, 1999) was an American musician from Texas. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was a child prodigy in country music but became a significant figure in roots rock and other genres. Sahm is considered one of the most important figures in what is identified as Tex-Mex music. He was the founder and leader of the 1960s rock and roll band, the Sir Douglas Quintet. He would later co-found the Texas Tornados with Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender, and Flaco Jiménez as well as Los Super Seven.

Sahm was proficient on multiple musical instruments and was a lifelong baseball fan.

Sahm began his musical career singing and playing steel guitar, mandolin and violin. He made his radio debut at the age of five. He released his first record "A Real American Joe" at age eleven. On December 19, 1952, at the age of eleven, he played on stage with Hank Williams Sr. at the Skyline Club in Austin, Texas. It was Hank Williams's very last performance. Williams died on New Year's Day of 1953, on the road to his next show, in Canton, Ohio. Sahm was offered a permanent spot on the Grand Ole Opry at age thirteen, but his mother wanted him to finish junior high.

One of Sahm's earliest recordings was rejected by Mercury Records in 1953. In the mid-1950s, he started sneaking into San Antonio rhythm and blues clubs, such as the Tiffany Lounge and the Ebony Lounge, and he was soon performing in them. Sahm formed his first band, the Knights, in 1957. Later in the decade, Sahm joined up with Spot Barnett's band, playing mostly black San Antonio blues clubs. In 1960, Sahm travelled across the country promoting a record. He met Freddy Fender in 1958 and met Roy Head, of Roy Head and the Traits, from San Marcos, Texas, in 1959, when they shared the stage at a sock hop in San Antonio's Municipal Auditorium.
