GROWING UP A..PROBLEM CHILD

$

Problem Child was born out of the band Little Joe founded by legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service drummer Greg Elmore, which also featured Greg Douglass (guitar), Bobby Vega (bass) and Charlie Williams (vocals)....
Charlie Williams would join up with former Doobie Brother Tom Johnston, and Greg Elmore would continue to work with Terry & The Pirates, and Nick Gravenites....
From there the band would continue as a four piece with John Cipollina and Greg Elmore handling the vocals, however this line up would change again and on Sept. 7th Bobby would quit Problem Child and they realized that yes they had chosen the right name....
Jeff quit Bad Dog only to be replaced by Greg Elmore, and Problem Child in need of a singer and bass player, it made sense for the two bands to merge....
This new line up of Problem Child - John Cipollina, Greg Douglass, Greg Elmore, Alex Dore amd Mike Pegeus - made their debut at the Starry Plough in Berkeley on September 20, 1986....
It was soon after this that Greg Elmore discovered Chris Cole singing with Bobby Vega's new group, The Joneses, and while enjoying a beer and the music decided to steal Chris away to join Problem Child.
Rob had been in Terraplane with Greg Douglass, Greg Elmore, Andy Andrus and occasionally Chris Cole and was the most logical replacement.

this show would be a beginning point for Problem Child with Paul Butterfield guesting for the night for the departed Charlie Williams

PEEVEY'S XMAS WISH

$
0
0

I have decided to add a new topic to the site. It seems that my blog lacks the most important item that should be included...... Music! I will post some different images on a weekly( or more basis) Since I am a big fan of such things as weird or nostalgic, sci fi and general offbeat items, you never know what will hit the posting. And all will have a selected tune to accompany it with a tidbit or so about the picture or song.
I will call the topic" From The Edge". that should cover just about anything that my taste happens to be at the time. Regular postings of the music will continue as always

So without further ado since it is Xmas time let's do a couple of Holiday things!!

Gayla Rienette Peevey was born March 8th, 1943 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in Capitol Hill Hospital to Lewin Austin and Edith Irene Peevey. The attending physician, Dr. Jackson. The family moved to Ponca City around 1948 and resided at 508 North Oak St. She began singing as a preschooler at the Second Baptist Church of Ponca City where she and her family were active members, and around the community for various events. When she got old enough to attend Lincoln Elementary school, she sang almost every day for her classmates and for assemblies. The second half of 4th grade her family moved back to Oklahoma City where Gayla began singing regularly on local TV on station WKY-TV. They moved to Hollywood the Summer of 1953 to appear as a regular on the Saturday Night Review hosted by Hoagy Carmichael. She signed a recording contract with Columbia Records around September of that year and recorded "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" and "Are My Ears on Straight" in New York produced by Mitch Miller. It was released Christmas of 1953. Gayla sang it in October on the Ed Sullivan Show prior to it's release. Taking advantage of the song's popularity, the Oklahoma City Zoo did a promotion with the News Paper to raise money mostly from donations sent in by children to buy "Gayla" a hippo. The campaign was a success and Matilda was delivered on Christmas Eve morning. Gayla accepted the baby hippo and then donated her to the zoo. Matilda lived in the Oklahoma City Zoo for over forty years and gave birth to many babies who were placed in other zoos around the country.

Gayla recorded a number of other children's songs, but none caught on like the Hippo song which is still popular today around the world. In fact it seems to have grown in popularity and airplay in the last fifteen or so years.

MEGAPHONE

As many of you may have seen I have started using Mega to upload. I was absolutely tired of the zippyshare 200mb limit and the pop ups that were hitting whenever someone tried to pull the file.
In addition the files were dropped almost instantly by most services with Zippy not long behind them doing the same. Now the bad side of this Mega will only provide you with 50gb on the free account. So I will be selecting which files to drop on my own based on your comments and feedback. I can only assume that IF no one provided comments on a post I may drop that post when I reach the storage limit. Maybe by that time I will be able to upgrade to a premium account but when you are on a fixed income you must pick and choose carefully  So we will see how that progresses
I will be reposting some old things and adding newer volumes to the subject as we go along as i have done with the Instra - Mentals comps. So once again I ask for yor feedback . It is nice to get a Thank You and they are appreciated. It would also be nice for a critique on the post....art, songs, whatever

K-SHE ST.LOUIS

As a young man growing up in the St.Louis area I was fortunate enough to be around for the birth of One of the first underground stations in the U.S. It is common knowledge that the underground radio format was born in San Francisco at KMPX by Tom Donahue and his group. Later it became even more prominent through KSAN. But an underground station In the Mid West? This station rivaled it's east and west coast sisters in every aspect. Amazingly while the others passed on KSHE continued on adapting and becoming even more prominent. They started as a true underground station and in late 69 early 70 began to move to the progressive rockers eventually playing heavier rock and roll. They still are on the air today over 45 years later. I do not care for their harder rock format but alas that is just the older hippie in me.
The picture posted is of Ruth Hutchinson, promoted as the worlds oldest rock and roll DJ She hosted a show called the KSHE Klassics and played music that the St Louis area deemed as classic songs .Ruth was 80 at that time The KSHE klassic show still airs on the radio station. I have put together some tunes from that time frame.
KSHE originally played lighter, female-oriented rock when it first started operating in 1961 as KSHE (Hence, the reason for the SHE in KSHE). In 1967 KSHE changed their music forever. They didn't use top 40 hits and upbeat DJs; they played the type of
music that is now known as AOR(album orientated rock). Many bought their first FM radios because of this station. Now, the station is so powerful, some can get reception as far north as Springfield, IL, mainly in truck radios. This is a two-hour drive and approximately 120 miles away. Sweet Meat, the pot smoking Pig is their slogan to this day (though he has kicked his marijuana habit), along with KSHE95 REAL ROCK RADIO. The first song played on KSHE95 was White Rabbit. During the 1970s and early 1980s, KSHE was influential in the growth of many midwestern bands (such as Styx, REO Speedwagon and Head East) as well as playing the album and progressive rock of that era. KSHE had a wide and varied play list, which popularized such rock artists as Lake from Germany and Stingray from South Africa as well as playing the classics from the more well-known rock legends.
KSHE also played free form and would sometimes play up to four hours nonstop until they got into trouble with the FCC.
Because FM radio during these years provided flexibility that the AM stations usually didn't allow, KSHE would frequently play concept albums in their entirety, as well as entire album sides from favorites such as Rush - "2112". Sunday evenings are dedicated to playing seven albums from seven different artists on a show called the "Seventh Day". The albums usually were played from 7:00 PM until somewhat after midnight. The "Seventh Day" concept was later used by other stations around the
country.
KSHE, one of the oldest continually operating rock stations in the United States, celebrated its 47t
h birthday as a rock station in November, 2014
