Notes:

01 How Have You Been (Winterland 1969-11-13) 3:51

This is the only known performance of one of the rarest released CSN songs. It's a solo performance by Stills. According to the Euro author?s book, Crosby strained his voice at a rally that day and they had to make some quick setlist changes.

02 Bluebird (Fillmore East 1970-06-30) 3:15

Dylan was in the audience and Stills had been drinking and was showing off for Bob. According to Zimmer's CSN biography, Stills went out to do one acoustic song and he did four.As the applause dies on Bluebird, Stills says, "I haven't done that ever that way in front of people". These words were for the benefit of Dylan.

03 As I Come Of Age (w/CSN - Fillmore East 1970-06-06) 3:30

Performed in shows in 1970, 1974 and 1978, one performance in 1977 and also a TV performance in 1991. Released on the CBS album "Stills" in 1975. This is NOT the official version, which tracks at 2:36

04 Move Around (w/Manassas - Amsterdam 1972-03-22) 5:11

The first Manassas concert at Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and the first performance of the song. It was played only 4 or 5 times.

05 Thoroughfare Gap (bluegrass version w/Manassas) Down The Road outtake 2:14

The song was re-recorded and released as a title cut 6 years later.

06 Know You Got To Run (ABC's "In Concert" 1973-02-21) 5:51

"This is a banjo, that is a beer", An infamous quote broadcast on national television. A Manassas show at Bananafish Gardens, NY.
The airdate was March 30, 1973.

07 4 + 20 (harmony version w/CSN - Seattle 1974-07-09) 3:17

The opener for the CSNY '74 tour in Seattle. This was the first performance of 4+20 as CSN intended for the song to be released on Deja Vu. Someone at Atlantic, probably Ahmet, stepped in and decided to release it as a solo song.

08 See The Changes (w/CSN - Lakeland, FL 1977-11-19) 3:58

I think that ?See The Changes? is as good, or even better, harmony song than Helplessly Hoping. Performed only in 1977 and 1982.

09 One Moment At A Time (Berkeley 1978-09-04) 5:17

Bread and Roses concert. An unreleased Stills original song. AKA "When Love Becomes A Trial". The only performance of this song.

10 In The Way (Afternoon Exchange - Cleveland 1980-08-18) 3:46

A performance on a local TV station in Cleveland before a Stills Band show that night. The only performance of this song.

11 Everybody's Talkin' (Davis, CA 1985-05-21) 4:21
("sing it twice") Stills does a little tribute to Freddie Neil in the middle of the song.

12 Haven't We Lost Enough (w/CSN - Rockline 1990-09-13) 4:04

The first and only performance of the song, "not even in the studio", by CSN. They recorded their parts separately for the released version. Stills did the song solo, one time, in a TV appearance on November 30, 1990.

13 Helplessly Hoping (w/CSN - Rockline 1990-09-13) 2:47

("her helicopter hovers nearby") A little twist on a CSN standard. Stills first used the line in stage banter at Woodstock.

14 It Won't Go Away (London 1992-10-08) 5:37

A rarely performed song and this was two years before it's release.

15 Dolphins (Jim Ladd's living room 2001-07-26) 4:22

A Fred Neil song done in tribute, Freddie died the week before. CSN performed the song, only once, in the tour opener that year in Clarkston, MI on August 13.

16 Man Of Constant Sorrow (Switzerland County, IN 2001-11-15) 3:00

A folk/blues standard popularized in the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Dylan did the song on his debut LP in 1962.

17 The Heart's Gate (Rapid City, SD 2003-04-03) 3:52

An unreleased (to this date) Stills original and it's beautiful, played in the Hawaiian slack key style.

18 Acadienne (Gainesville 2003-10-23) 3:15

An unreleased (to this date) Stills original. Stills has been performing the song in a Cajun flavored band arrangement for several years. This is the first solo performance of the song that I've heard and it works!!

19 Daylight Again/Find The Cost Of Freedom (complete version w/Manassas - BBC 1970-11-16) 7:01

DA/FTCOF performed in it's complete arrangement, a seven minute suite. Stills performed this version several times, each time with different lyrics. Stills comments about the song from the box set booklet:
"Daylight Again was actually a precursor to "Find The Cost Of Freedom", but for years all I had was the tune and the first line..... I was in Williamsburg, VA, drunk and burnt out and dead tired. At the end of the concert I began to play the song. I didn't have any words, but I continued to play. I closed my eyes and went into a trance and saw a movie. It was a talking dream where I went back 112 years, to the Civil War. The lyrics just flowed through me like an automatic poem. I sang them as they came into my head and a whole story unfolded. When the concert was over I rushed backstage and madly tried to reconstruct the lyrics. It's a war song, not just a Civil War song.

Stephen Stills & Manssas
22-03-1972, Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Holland
FM analog/FM DAT/Audience analog

This was the first ever concert of this band. They sound good for a first time out. Great band, A supergroup  per say
The concert was recorded for radio and TV. Over the years different parts of the show have been broadcast by radio, the last one in 2001 as we know of.
This project was completed in 2002, and a 3cd set was distributed in a small circle of people
It has come to pub;ic  knowledge that several different bootlegs were made up of this original set, even original artwork was used in some of these.
A very good reason to give this set a more public performance
Due to broadcasting proceedings some of the songs are cut as indicated. The third CD has the complete audience versions of the cut FM versions, for collectors only, as it is of poor quality.
Beside the superb sound quality of CD 1 and CD 2, the setlist has some nice gems like Move Around (ever played again?) Sugar Babe (rare outing), a long rap in "For What It's Worth" as a piano version
and "Know You Got To Run" as the early version of "Ballad Of A Blind Fiddler"

I was browsing around and found of couple of images of one of my favorite TV characters..  Brisco Darling. It was always enjoyable to watch the Darling clan give Sheriff Taylor a fit in Mayberry.. The "boys" in Brisco's musical family were The Dillards an authentic old timey group. And Brisco himself played a mean Jug It seemed fitting to use him as a cover for a collection of jug band/good time music selections. Go ahead and listen to these tunes and I will bet you will find yourself tapping your feet along with the music.

FINGER LICKIN' GOOD

In 1968, Hicks formed Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks with violinist David LaFlamme. LaFlamme was quickly replaced by jazz violinist "Symphony" Sid Page. Vocalists Sherry Snow and Christine Gancher, guitarist Jon Weber, and bassist Jaime Leopold filled out the band, unusual in having no drummer. This line-up was signed to Epic and in 1969 issued the album Original Recordings, produced by Bob Johnston. The first Hot Licks line-up lasted until 1971 and then disintegrated.

When Hicks reformed the band, Page and Leopold remained, and vocalists Naomi Ruth Eisenberg and Maryann Price joined, followed later by guitarist John Girton. This group recorded three albums, culminating in 1973's Last Train to Hicksville (on which the group first added a drummer). After existing as a critical success only, this last album gained the group wider acclaim, as evidenced by Hicks' appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone. Thus, it was a great surprise to many when he chose that moment to disband the Hot Licks. Asked why in 1974, he said:

"I didn't want to be a bandleader anymore. It was a load and a load I didn't want. I'm basically a loner... I like singing and stuff, but I didn't necessarily want to be a bandleader. The thing had turned into a collective sort of thing – democracy, vote on this, do that. I conceived the thing. They wouldn't be there if it wasn't for me. My role as leader started diminishing, but it was my fault because I let it happen; I cared less as the thing went on."

As time passed, this particular Hot Licks band became Hicks'"classic" band, in part due to Page's passionate fiddling, combining swing and classical training, as well as Price's sultry jazz vocals in the style of Anita O'Day, reflecting her pre-Hicks performing experience.

The Cleanliness And Godliness Skiffle Band were a Berkeley, California based group and consisted of Annie Johnston (vocals-guitar-mandolin-wood blocks), Hank Bradley (vocals-fiddle-mandolin-harmonica), Phil Marsh (vocals-guitar), Brian Voorheis (vocals-harmonica-guitar) and Richard Saunders (bass).

The group released their only album on Vanguard Records in 1968, and then led the recording of the infamous Masked Marauders album, along with some members of Sky Blue, but CGSB ground to a halt in early 1970. Robert Christgau gave them a favorable review, preferring them over the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. (Max Collodie)

I am very sure that not every 60's garage band played every one of these songs. but I am also very sure that each one of these songs was played by a garage band at sometime or another. This is a comp that highlights some of the other songs that each band may have had in very own set-list or tool box as I will call it. I can  certainly believe that there are many more songs that could be called a classic garage band tune.

FACT OR FICTION ?

$

The story of a rumored but fictional LP
For years and years people have talked about and have questioned the possibility of an LP by the original lineup of the band Love called Gethsemane. This LP was to supposedly said to be the fourth Love LP ,following the masterpiece Forever Changes. There are no true facts about this project. I believe that if there was a possibility the record industry would have tried to capitalized on it by now.  It was stated by Bryan Maclean in an interview that it was BS unless it was conceived after his departure from the band. Arthur himself would make no comments about it either confirming or denying its possibility. On the other hand Love guitarist Johnny Echols contends it was indeed a fact and there was material  for it in the works when the band broke up and everyone went their separate ways. Arthur would of course reform his band  and put out the fourth album as Four Sail. Listening to the material on that lp makes you wonder if just maybe there could be some thread of truth seeing how the songs are indeed very closely similar to the previous lp material  There is no Gethsemane. I have taken the liberty of putting together a comp by the band only to show that Arthur and Bryan were creative wonders but when the band shattered it slowly caused their creativeness to suffer. Bryan's later work(demos) showed some creative flashes but truly in OMO (one man's opinion) he needed the band to gel. The same could be said for Arthur's material as time went by. His words and music were no where near what the chemistry of the original Love gave him. They are both gone now so we will never really know. Johnny Echols speaks of working on that very named LP today but you have to wonder how much of it can match what might have been. Maybe Johnny can give us all hope for it's reality!

The above artwork is from Burt Shonburg who created the cover for the Out Here lp

01  laughing stock
02  your mind and we belong to each other
03  number 14
04  wonder people (i do wonder)

These four songs are non-lp songs. It is speculated that  the first two were actually to be  on the supposed fourth lp by the original lineup. Number 3 is from earlier love recording sessions and was indeed the 'Bside for 7 and 7 is. The 4th tune is an actual outtake from the Forever Changes sessions

05  barber john
06  love will be here

These two are Bryan Maclean demos with Number 6 being considered for FC being nixed by Bryan himself

07  i'm with you
08  robert montgomery
09  nothing
10  always see your face
11  your friend and mine - neil's song

Five songs from the Four Sail lineup. All have the feel of possibly been chosen for the mythical lp. Imagine what the original lineup might have have done (nothing against the good work the new lineup did) with these songs

12  listen to my song
13  willow willow
14  gather round

From the Out Here Lp with once again qualities that might have been especially track 14  Arthurs lyrics always were a strong point for the times

15  you're the prettiest song
16  five string serenade

Two from the Arthur Lee Five String lp of 1992 with a little bit of the old spirit of Lee's songwriting intact

Danny Gatton (September 4, 1945 – October 4, 1994) was an American guitarist who fused rockabilly, jazz, and country styles to create his own distinctive style of playing. A biography, Unfinished Business: The Life and Times of Danny Gatton by Ralph Heibutzki, was published in 2003. It has a voluminous discography. When Rolling Stone magazine selected the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time in 2003, senior editor David Fricke ranked Gatton 63rd on his ballot. On May 26, 2010, Gibson.com ranked Gatton as the 27th best guitarist of all time.

Gatton's playing combined musical styles such as jazz, blues and rockabilly in an innovative fashion, and he was known by some as "the Telemaster." He was also called "the world's greatest unknown guitarist". His most common nickname was "The Humbler", owing to his ability to out-play anyone willing to go up against him in "head-cutting" jam sessions. It was Amos Garrett, guitar player for Maria Muldaur, who nicknamed Gatton "The Humbler". After a successful gig, Garrett would pull out a tape of Gatton and tell his band, "You think we played well tonight. Let's take a minute to listen to the Humble-lizer." A photo published in the October 2007 issue of Guitar Player magazine shows Gatton playing in front of a neon sign that says "Victims Wanted".

The Seeds were a 1960s rock and roll band based in Los Angeles, California, United States, whose raw and abrasive energy, and simple, repetitive lyrics came to exemplify the garage rock style. The band was active from 1965 to 1972. Lead singer Sky Saxon was heavily influenced in style and appearance by Mick Jagger, and the group promoted the fact that Blues great Muddy Waters once called them “America’s own Rolling Stones.” Keyboardist Daryl Hooper was a major factor in the band’s sound; the band was one of the first to utilize keyboard bass; guitarist Jan Savage and drummer Rick Andridge completed the original quartet.

The Seeds’ first single, “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine,” was a regional hit in southern California in 1965. The band had a national top-40 hit, “Pushin’ Too Hard”, in 1966. Two subsequent singles, “Mr. Farmer,” (also 1966) and “A Thousand Shadows” (1968) achieved more modest success. Though musically primitive, one album was devoted to the Blues (with liner notes by Muddy Waters), and another (Future, 1967) was full-blown psychedelic rock, with ornate flower-themed graphics to match. The original Seeds disbanded in 1970, shortly after the release of "Raw and Alive at Merlin’s Music Box."“Pushin’ Too Hard” was named one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The group, whose repertoire spread between garage rock and acid rock, are considered one of the pioneers of punk rock, coining the phrase, "Flower Power."
