As I began to select tunes for this tenth edition of this instrumental series, I was very sure that I would stop after this volume.. I found myself sinking into heavier and longer tracks and found another burst of energy to continue onward. Indeed these choices become more powerful after the first couple of tunes and and I found that the longer I play songs like "watermelon" and "maggot' it has intrigued me to dig deeper  for a a while longer.. Incredible guitar works and arrangements( note the bells in the "watermelon" background. I dare say this track alone pushes the very button of why I listen to so much music.

01 ghost riders(in the sky) - ramrods

Shake Down is the debut studio album by the British blues rock band Savoy Brown. It was released in 1967 (on Decca SKL 4883) under the name of Savoy Brown Blues Band and is mainly an album of covers, featuring three songs penned by blues singer Willie Dixon. In addition to Dixon, the band covers John Lee Hooker and B.B. King. No U.S. Release. Kim Simmonds  Assembled A Multiracial Band In 1965/66 And By 1967 Had Recorded "Shake Down". It's A Traditional Blues Album That Is Very Reminiscent Of Getting To The Point. Shake Down Consists Mostly Of Electrified Blues Rockers With A Great Edge And Spark, One Of The Best Tracks Is "Doormouse Rides The Rails", Featuring The Band's First-Rate Second Guitarist, Martin Stone. His Interplay With Savoy Brown Guitarist (& Band Leader) Kim Simmonds On Such Tracks As "It's All My Fault,""Shake 'Em On Down," And Especially On The Traditional Blues Opus "Black Night" Are Among The High Points Of The Album. Singer Bryce Portius Works Very Well For This Material. His Highlights Include The Howlin' Wolf Classic "I Ain't Superstitious," And The Willie Dixon-Penned Tune, "Little Girl". Kim Is Already Showing Maturity Beyond His Teenage Years In Terms Of Track Selection And Musical Direction; As A Guitarist, He Shows His Chops Very Nicely On "Shake 'Em On Down," Already Clearly Grasping The Less-Is-More Concept That Makes For Great Blues. Shake Down Is A Blues Gem.

THE PERFECT CHICKEN

40 Blue Fingers, Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve is the debut album by the blues band Chicken Shack, released in 1968. The album reached number 12 in the UK charts. This album has three Freddy King covers; Lonesome Whistle Blues and See See Baby from Freddy King Sings; and San-Ho-Zay from Let's Hide Away and Dance Away.

Formed in 1967, Chicken Shack consisted of Stan Webb on guitar/vocal, Andy Sylvester on bass, Christine Perfect on vocals/keyboards, and Alan Morley on drums. An earlier 1964 incarnation had been called 'Sounds of Blue' and Christine played in this band while a student at art college in Birmingham. Sounds of Blue disbanded after a year when Christine and another member left Birmingham for careers in London. Then, at the beginning of 1967, Andy once again contacted Chris and suggested that she rejoin her former mates in a new band. (The group got their name from the chicken coup in Kidderminster where the band often rehearsed.) Chris admits that she was not the most accomplished blues pianist when she joined the group, but developed her own style from listening to Freddy King records.

Chicken Shack made their public debut at the Great Britain's National Blues & Jazz Festival at Windsor along with Fleetwood Mac on August 13, 1967-- "There were two stages at Windsor, the main one an open-air ramshackle structure, the other inside a marquee. Fleetwood Mac had their initiation on the main stage but much was made of Chicken Shack's tented debut." The group became the second major signing of the Blue Horizon record label (co-founded by Mike Veron), the first being Fleetwood Mac. Chicken Shack's first two albums,Forty Blue Fingers Freshly Packed and Ready to Serve and OK Ken?, were quite successful, with much of the credit due to the fact that they had a beautiful, talented, female keyboardist and vocalist-- something that most definitely added individuality to the group in the male-dominated late 60's music scene. Christine's version of Etta James''I'd Rather Go Blind' was a massive hit, and she was voted Best Female Vocalist in the Melody Maker polls two years running.

The Heart of Gold Band was organized by Keith and Donna Godchaux after their departure from the Grateful Dead in 1979. Unfortunately, Keith Godchaux was killed in a car accident in 1980, effectively scuttling the new group, though tapes of them were issued on album several years later

Original image art by Rick Griffin

Drawn from Robert Hunter's timeless lyric in The Grateful Dead's "Scarlet Begonias," Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux started "The Heart of Gold Band" along with drummer Greg Anton early on in 1980 following their years as band members in the Grateful Dead. Although there were personnel changes in the short-lived tenure of the HGB (including a young and very talented guitar player, Steve Kimock, and piano player/composer, Mark Adler.), Greg was the constant. Thanks to him, the spirit of the band has been kept alive over the years through funky, cassette-recorded gigs that would have never been released on record or CD under normal circumstances. The extra-normal presented itself when Keith was killed in a car accident in July of 1980, only a few days after their first gig in San Francisco. The band reorganized and played just a few shows before disbanding in early 1981.
23 years later, in a most unexpected turn, "The Heart of Gold Band" returned Keith's and Donna Jean's son, Zion Rock Godchaux, wrote, sang, played guitar, drums, sax, and helped produce many of the songs on the newly-released CD, "At The Table." Zion and Donna Jean sing together on a few songs. Keith's brother, Brian Godchaux, also sings several songs that he wrote, and plays acoustic and electric mandolin and violin. (Brian has been violinist for Dan Hicks for the better part of 15 years.)
David MacKay, Donna Jean's husband, (a member of the reorganized "Heart of Gold Band" following Keith's death) played stand-up and electric bass (including some rich fretless), Wurlitzer electric piano, and wrote the only instrumental track, "Three Dog Jig." David and Donna Jean's son, Kinsman MacKay, played guitar and wrote and sang the closing track. The result is a multi-flavored blend of electric and acoustic roots music, from soaring electric violin and mandolin to earthy tastes of reggae and R&B to down-home stand-up bass and brushes. Lead vocals are shared between Brian, Donna Jean, Zion, and Kinsman, with harmonies that definitely suggest a "family blend."

In the late summer of 1969, following the release of Truly Fine Citizen, Moby Grape's last album for Columbia, Jerry Miller and Don Stevenson joined with John Barrett (bass) and John "Fuzzy" Oxendine (drums) to form The Rhythm Dukes. Don Stevenson played guitar, rather than drums. It is speculated that he left the band shortly after its formation for that reason, preferring to remain a drummer.

The band came together at Jerry Miller's initiative, at a time when the future of Moby Grape was uncertain. Moby Grape members had been shocked by Bob Mosley's abrupt departure to join the Marines, shortly after the release of Moby Grape '69. This added to uncertainties that commenced at the time of the 1968 departure of Skip Spence from the band, as the result of a six month involuntary psychiatric committal during the course of recording Wow/Grape Jam. The recording of Truly Fine Citizen in 1969 had been similarly strained, in that Columbia Records had imposed a three day limit on recording time, thus demonstrating little support for Moby Grape's future.

The band lived together in Santa Cruz and, following Stevenson's departure, was joined by Bill Champlin on organ and vocals. The future of Champlin's band, The Sons of Champlin, was at that time uncertain, similar to the situation which Miller and Stevenson had faced. Champlin, along with Miller, became the group's principal songwriters. The Rhythm Dukes shared the stage with such artists as Albert Collins, Lee Michaels, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Canned Heat, The Grateful Dead and Cat Mother & the All Night Newsboys, generally being second-billed. They recorded one album in 1970, which saw release in 2005 as Flashback

The band existed from 1969-1971. Despite Columbia's attitude towards Moby Grape, Miller was still subject to contractual obligations to Columbia, which were disruptive to Rhythm Dukes commitments.[2] Champlin consequently left the band, to continue with the Sons of Champlin. Miller, Barrett and Oxendine continued the band for a short period thereafter, with such musicians as guitarists Russell Dahneke and Ned Torney, the latter being a founding member of the Chocolate Watchband.Miller would later rejoin Stevenson and the other original members of Moby Grape to record 20 Granite Creek, (1971), which effectively ended The Rhythm Dukes. Champlin would continue playing and recording with The Sons of Champlin for the balance of the 1970s, prior to commencing a solo career and later joining Chicago.

NUESTROS AMIGOS DE LA MUSICA

Here is a twist on a themed set of tunes. I wanted to showcase the influence of Latin based music on recording artists of my generation. Most of the chosen tunes are not by Latin artists but have a Latin "spin" to some of their songs. You can hear where they have used various Latin styles in the music. You can hear the brass, flamenco  guitars, percussion and  even hear it in the lyrics and storytelling in the songs. It is always nice to put in some authentic Latin artists to complement the overall presentation.

A couple of tidbits of info.....

Doug Sahm(Sir Douglas Quintet) has always put a Latin spin in his Tex Mex songs

Odd but Babe Ruth (English Prog band had several Latin themed songs on their LP's One song was actually re-recorded as a disco version.

Peppy Castro of the Blues Magoos  reformed that psychedelic band to Cuban influenced music

The Gipsy Kings are
actually from the south of France and mix their songs to Spanish and Gypsy  influences

DOIN' THE BLACK BOTTOM

Black Bottom refers to a dance which became popular in the 1920s, the famed Roaring Twenties that also was known as the Jazz Age and the era of the Flapper. The Black Bottom could be danced solo or as a couple.

Originating among African Americans in the rural South, the Black Bottom eventually was appropriated by white society and became a national craze in the 1920s. The dance was most famously performed by Ziegfeld Follies star Ann Pennington, who danced the Black Bottom in a Broadway revue put on by Zeigfeld's rival George White in 1926

The title track from this 1981 LP is a take on the 20's gangster presence . This  Troggs release shows great original music by the band who never died even after the loss of key members.

I just wanted to say a few words about the blog in general

This blog was started in March of 2008. It has well over 1000 posts
The very first post was Micky Hart's Rolling Thunder.
It is indeed a labor of love focusing on the music that I enjoy
. As you have probably seen I have started updating some of the older files on the site. Summer is on now here in Atlanta and it seems that the blog readers are out doing other things. So I decided to revisit some of the old stuff. I will update a post for you if you can be courteous enough to Email me at 24hrdejavu@gmail.com  I would like your name and location to add a bit of personalization on the request. After all it is nice to know who  I am in contact with. I will ignore all anonymous requests!  As you well know it takes some time to research the materials . Some posts may well be totally obsolete for various reasons
When an update is posted I will use the "Recall" logo and all you have to do is go to the right sidebar and find the artist and click on it  and you can scroll through the page(s) to find your selection. You ..probably noticed I use the term recall vs repost ( I dislike that  description)

Once again I appreciate any comments or ideas that you may have So don't be afraid to plug in a comment or two. It does'nt hurt and I appreciate them
