Perro, or Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, was the name given to the group of musicians who played, recorded and jammed together in the early 70′s. They were, essentially, members of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills and Nash. Their first album together, Blows Against The Empire, was released, not as the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra, but as Jefferson Starship (a name later used for Grace Slick and Paul Kantner’s band formed in 1974). They then officially became Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra on David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name.

In 1971, these musicians got together for rehearsals at Wally Heider Studios and, luckily for us, these sessions were recorded (see below) yielding some truly remarkable music and interactions between this collective group of inspired and supremely talented artists. They were as follows:

    David Crosby – guitar, vocals
    Graham Nash – guitar, vocals
Paul Kantner – guitar, banjo, vocals
    Grace Slick – piano, vocals
    Jorma Kaukonen – lead guitar
    Jack Casady – bass
    Jerry Garcia – guitar, vocals
    Phil Lesh – bass
    Bill Kreutzmann – drums
    Mickey Hart – percussion
    David Freiberg – viola, vocals
     and others

The following LP's were recorded as PERRO and each was released as solo works by the main artist......

1970  Blows Against The Empire - Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship
1970  If I Could Only Remember My Name - David Crosby
1971  Songs For Beginners - Graham Nash
1971  Sunfighter - Paul Kantner and Grace Slick
1972  Graham Nash and David Crosby - Nash and Crosby
1972  Rolling Thunder - Mickey Hart
1973  Baron Von Tollbooth And The Chrome Nun - Kantner, Slick and David Freiberg

A return to the title Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra was used for a 1983 Lp by Kantner and others

Sometime late 2011 or 2012 Gary Duncan pulled out of his connection and touring with the Jefferson Starship. With him he took the Quicksilver moniker. Not to be left out in the cold David Freiberg and his wife Linda Imperial have resurfaced as The Imperial Messenger Service. They have been opening for the Starship as of earlier this year and are  performing QMS material and are playing it somewhat better than Duncan was doing. Their set also highlights Linda's material since in realistic terms the band is essentially hers.
The QMS is just as much part of Freiberg's legacy as was anyone else in the band. Here are four sets from IMS . They are short but are pretty good. Thanks David for keeping the QMS spirit alive !

I have always enjoyed the music of Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship. with some people you either really like them or you reaaly hate them. Paul's dabbling in sci fi themes was like an added bonus for me. This posting is from the Starship's rendition of the Bladerunner score . Paul mixes the music of both the Airplane and Starship (and other themes) to create his vision of the classic sci-fi piece

GODCHAUX'S SPIRITS

These live recordings come from a fluid period in the lives of several key Bay Area musicians in the early 80's. They bridge the death of Keith Godchaux who with Donna Godchaux first formed "The Ghosts" after playing with the Grateful Dead through most of the 70's, adding the flavor of their gospel and R&B roots to the Dead's music, touring, recording six albums and a solo album. Keith and Donna were also an integral part of the Jerry Garcia Band of the 70's. "The Ghosts" went on to become the "Heart of Gold Band" - a flash in time, sparkling, dynamic, where Keith and Donna expressed a magical musicality together.

Keith and Donna Godchaux issued the mostly self-written Keith and Donna album in 1975 with Jerry Garcia as a member of their band. The album was recorded at their home in Stinson Beach, where they lived in the 1970s. In turn, they performed as part of the Jerry Garcia Band. Subsequently, Godchaux co-wrote songs with Lowell George (of Little Feat) and Robert Hunter. The cover features the Godchaux's son Zion. Garcia provided drawings representing his [Zion's] thoughts.

A DIFFERENT SPIRIT

After 4 successul LP's Spirit began to crumble internally. Exiting the band to pursue other paths were Jay Ferguson, Mark Andes and Randy California. Not to be discouraged the band moved ahead with drummer Ed Cassidy and Keyboardist John Locke recruiting the Staehealy brothers Al and Chris to carry on. The result was the fifth Spirit album "Feedback" This was the only Spirit album to feature John and Al Staehely as band members. Musically it was a different turn for the band, in favor of a country influenced hard rock style and lyrics mostly dealing with conventional male-female love topics, with only the tracks "Darkness" and the instrumentals "Puesta Del Scam" and "Trancas Fog-Out" recalling Spirit's earlier psychedelic rock. Although the album wasn't widely heard in later years, it has finally surfaced on cd and has received some extremely satisfying notices. The Feedback tour saw the remaining original members (Locke and Cassidy) leave the band during the tour, and Chris and Al Staehely regrouped the band under a new name, Sta-Hay-Lee, recording another album self-titled under the Sta-Hay-Lee name in 1972. Chris Staehely would later join Jay Ferguson's band Jo Jo Gunne. This LP charted as high as the previous "12 Dreams" and is in fact a very fine record overall.
Here is a show taped the same week as the LP release.

  Ed Cassidy - drums
  John Locke- keyboards

In keeping with the timeline between the California - less Spirits, here is another one from Ed Cassidy and another lineup of Spirit. It is very obvious that Ed was indeed the backbone and driving force during the whole Spirit story. It is well accepted as Randy being the essence of the band but it is Ed Cassidy who held this band together and should given credit as the one true Spirit band member .

Spooky Tooth are an English rock band principally active, with intermittent breakups, between 1967 to 1974. In recent years, the band has been reconstituted at various points, and continues to perform occasionally.
Crucial to their sound was their instrumentation; they were one of the relatively few rock acts of the time to adopt the twin keyboard approach (both an organ and a piano player).

They formed in October 1967, when Gary Wright joined the band Art. The band name Art only existed from April to October 1967. Art was renamed from The V.I.P.'s, as the name fitted better to the new musical direction taken on the album Supernatural Fairy Tales. Gary Wright held a significant role from the start. He wrote the majority of the first Spooky Tooth album, some even with record producer Jimmy Miller instead of band members.

Their 1969 album Spooky Two is arguably their best release but over the years they enjoyed varying support as their sound evolved and changed. There is a strong link with another band around this time called Humble Pie as members joined this group also as line ups changed.

The line-up changed several times, but typically was -

Mike Harrison (born Michael Harrison, 3 September 1945, Carlisle, Cumbria) (keyboards/vocals)
Greg Ridley (born Alfred Gregory Ridley, 23 October 1947, Aspatria, Cumbria — died 19 November 2003, in Alicante, Spain) (bass guitar/vocals)
Luther (Luke) Grosvenor (born Luther James Grosvenor, 23 December 1946, Evesham, Worcestershire) (guitar/vocals)
Mike Kellie, (born Michael Alexander Kellie, 24 March 1947, Birmingham, Warwickshire) (drums)
Gary Wright, (born Gary Malcolm Wright, 26 April 1943, Cresskill, New Jersey, U.S.) (organ/vocals)

The 13th LP by Spirit. It brought Randy and Ed together with Mike Nile (on bass) back to a power trio.
The music is exceptionally good and those songs by Nile made him more than just a player. He fits in well and gives the band a new feel with some great cuts. released in 1990. The band gives us some great sounding fireworks for the 4th of July
