CHAMBER MUSIC

Rapture in the Chambers was a 1988 album by Spirit.

It was their first "proper" album since their 1976 album Farther Along, which had featured almost the entire original line-up (Jay Ferguson, who was concentrating on his solo career, was absent). Their albums since that time had mostly consisted of archival releases, live albums, a re-union attempt, and Future Games, which is largely considered to be a Randy California solo album in everything but name. It was also their final album for an established label, IRS Records.

The primary line-up for this album was Randy, Ed and John Locke. Mark Andes also appeared on two tracks, and Randy's sister Janet provided harmony vocals on Hard Love.

In keeping with the "spirit" of things I thought I would focus a post on John Locke. John was the original keyboardist with the band and composed many of the groups songs while with the group. After the Feedback LP  John moved on to other interests coming back to Spirit off and on until his death .
John played boards with Nazareth in the early 80's

Here is a tribute group of songs composed by John.

TRIBAL STOMP AND THE POETS

In late 1978 legendary San Francisco concert producer made a comeback after being out of the music business for many years. Chet Helms put together another "Tribal Stomp" gathering. Here are six of the seven discs or files as  it were. As always I have taken the liberty of creating some of my own work for you to feast your mortal eyes on. The second image is the original artwork from the bootleg set. The first posting here features some of San Francisco's poets. The poets were always a big part of the "hippie" movement with some of the folks having had history in the late 50's and early 60's as members of the beat generation.

A quick note of interest about David La Flamme and IABD. This show marked the reunion of the band for the first time. All original members were present except for Patty Santos and La Flammes first wife Linda. Ironically her place was taken by David's second wife Linda who was going by the name of Dominique. The band used the moniker of It Was instead of It's A because of their legal issues with that rat Matthew Katz. Patty did not join at the advice of her lawyer.

CHET'S BIG BROTHER

Chester Leo "Chet" Helms (August 2, 1942 – June 25, 2005), often called the father of San Francisco's 1967 "Summer of Love", was a music promoter and a cultural figure in San Francisco during its hippie period in the late Sixties.

Helms was the founder and manager of Big Brother and the Holding Company and recruited Janis Joplin as its lead singer. He was a producer and organizer, helping to stage free concerts and other cultural events at Golden Gate Park, the backdrop of San Francisco's Summer of Love in 1967, as well as at other venues, including the Avalon Ballroom.

He was the first producer of psychedelic light-show concerts at the Fillmore and the Avalon Ballroom and was instrumental in helping to develop bands that had the distinctive San Francisco Sound. Helms died June 25, 2005 of complications from hepatitis C. He was 62.
Background image for the above artwork is a lightshow image created by Bill Ham. Lights by Bill Ham was the lightshow artist for the Tribal Stomp show. Light Sound Dimension (LSD) was possibly the first psychedelic lightshow and was operated by the legendary Bill Ham. Bill pioneered kinetic lighting and actually used this technique at the Red Dog Saloon back in 1965. It was also at the Red Dog Saloon where Chet Helms first met Bill and asked him to produce lightshows at the Avalon Ballroom. Click on Bill's picture for a trip to his web page. Great reading!!

High quality under-circulated Audience recording of Joe and Barry acoustic. They
seem to be deciding on the setlist as they go along, but the interplay
between both guitars is excellent. A gem of a show putting Joe and Barry together again which never occurred enough times.
