THE MATRIX PROJECT

I was surfing around the internet ( As Always) looking for something new and different. I came across  this 8 volume set of concerts from the Fillmore and Matrix. I guess these have been around for a little while and I do not know how I missed them. Anyhow It looks as if this new set of shows is intended to extend the SF Nights- KSAN vault series. The file is all one show and latter I may break them down to individual tracks but that takes some time so you get the whole show for now. So enjoy them and if you haven;t heard them before it is a treat. The bit rate is all other the place and I did not adjust it it anyway. The artwork is the original included and The poster presentation is a nice touch

A few pros and cons about this series......pretty nice grapics even though they do repeat themselves from volume to volume with only the poster addition to help the presentation. fairly good sound on most of the files although for the most part I think they have all circulated as boots before. My biggest point is this.....none of the featured performers were SF originals however it reflects the importance the ballrooms in SF had on attracting such a wide variety of musicians to the scene. Your comments are welcome!

It is apparent that these two Doors sets were pulled from the Complete Matrix Doors Bootleg which was 4 CD's There was an officially released version of this material in 2008 but it was produced so badly that most Doors fans were offended by the work. The record company promised an upgraded version in 2010 but so far it has not materialized
This is the only reasonable-fidelity document of the Doors before they became superstars; their first album had been out for a couple of months, but "Light My Fire" (the earliest widely circulated live version of which is here) was yet to even be released as a single. As a consequence there's a hungry edge missing from their later live gigs, and a more unpredictable set list, taking in not only most of the first album but also relatively obscure tracks from the second and third LPs, like "I Can't See Your Face in My Mind" and "Summer's Almost Gone." And there's a whole bunch of cover tunes they would never release in studio versions, like "Get Out of My Life Woman,""Who Do You Love?,""Rock Me,""I'm a King Bee" (with Manzarek on vocals), "Gloria," a lengthy instrumental take on "Summertime," and "Money." There's a bar band ambiance that will take some listeners aback, and not many people in the audience, judging from the tennis match-style clapping heard at the end of most numbers. the Doors  play well, however, and the two shows are notably different from each other, although many of the same tunes appear in two different versions on this package.

There are two tracks from Traffic at the end used as filler I left them intact until I can delete them later

AVALON ELEVATORS

This quasi-legal production has shown up in other packages (and titles) since its original issue. It's a fair-quality tape of a 1966 concert that's a decent document for fans. The versions don't differ a heck of a lot from the ones on the records, though "Splash I," given a more forceful and full-bodied folk-rock arrangement, is a notable exception. There are also a few somewhat unexpected covers, like "Roll Over Beethoven,""You Really Got Me," Buddy Holly's "I'm Gonna Love You Too," and the Beatles'"The Word." I added track 12 to this set simply because it's pretty much the Elevator's signature song.

While much of the 13th Floor Elevators’ popularity today rests upon their studio albums and 45s, this wasn’t always the case. Especially not in Texas, where the Elevators first became famous as an outstanding live act, with a combination of ferocious drive and dark mystique that was unlike anything seen before. When the Psychedelic Sounds LP was released in late ‘66, some fans in their hometown Austin felt it was missing a bit of the captivating energy they associated with the band. Even Tommy Hall, the band’s lyricist and intellectual nexus, stated in a 1989 interview that “our real show was live”.

The Elevators never felt entirely at home in San Francisco, although fellow Texan Chet Helms offered them many chances to play at the Avalon. Compiled from those gigs, the Avalon ’66 Tape gives terrific proof of the band’s prowess. Ronnie Leatherman’s bass adds a steady, almost majestic power to newly added numbers like “Before You Accuse Me” and (arguably the high-point) “You Don’t Know”. Compared with the fire-breathing r’n’b drive of the Spring ’66 recordings, updated covers of “The Word” and “You Really Got Me” show the band moving towards a more mature, acid-rock sound. The tape shows, quite simply, a great 60s rock band at the peak of their powers.

BANANA?

The Youngbloods could not be considered a major '60s band, but they were capable of offering some mighty pleasurable folk-rock in the late '60s, and produced a few great tunes along the way. One of the better groups to emerge from the East Coast in the mid-'60s, they would temper their blues and jug band influences with gentle California psychedelia, particularly after they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. For most listeners, they're identified almost exclusively with their Top Ten hit "Get Together," but they managed several respectable albums as well, all under the leadership of singer/songwriter Jesse Colin Young.

Young got his start on the folk circuits of Boston and New York, and had already cut a couple of solo albums before forming the Youngbloods. John Sebastian was one of the supporting musicians on Young's second LP, and comparisons between the two — and between the Youngbloods and the Lovin' Spoonful — are inevitable. Both groups offered good-timey folk-rock with much stronger jug band influences than West Coast rivals like the Byrds, though the Youngbloods made greater use of electric keyboards than the Spoonful, courtesy of the enigmatically named Lowell "Banana" Levinger. The Youngbloods didn't craft nearly as many brilliant singles as the Lovin' Spoonful, but (unlike the Spoonful) endured well into the hippie/psychedelic era.

While Young was always the focal point of the band, their first two albums also had songwriting contributions from guitarist Jerry Corbitt. Produced by Felix Pappalardi (who also worked with Cream), these records (The Youngbloods and Earth Music) were engaging and mature, if inconsistent, folk-rock. Corbitt's "Grizzly Bear" was a small hit, as was "Get Together," a Dino Valenti song that had previously been recorded by Jefferson Airplane. The Youngbloods' slow, soulful interpretation of "Get Together" was definitive, but it wouldn't reach the Top Ten until it was re-released in 1969, after the song had been used in a television public service ad.

I will have to upgrade to a new computer with a new OS as windows 7 or 8 but it may be awhile. I will try to stay in touch via a laptop but to do things efficiently I will have to upgrade. The posting will be a little more infrequent but I will get back into full swing hopefully soon.

BAROQUE ROCK

The Left Banke is an American baroque pop band that formed in New York City in 1965, disbanded in 1969, and reformed in 2011 They are best remembered for their two US hit singles, "Walk Away Renée" and "Pretty Ballerina".The band often utilized what the music press referred to as "baroque" string arrangements, which led to their music being variously termed as "Bach-rock", "baroque rock", or "baroque 'n' roll" On most of their reunion dates, the group was joined onstage by a two or three-piece string section and even a guest oboe player for one or two shows.

THAT SPOONFUL

$

0

I am going to revisit some of my posts from the early years of this site.
I ran a series of compilations that were called Basic Garage Mechanics. Essentially they were songs that I felt every garage band had in their repertoire. Every local band played at least 2 or 3 of these songs.
I have put together a fresh look at each of the songs and their importance to the genre of garage bands.

 SPOONFUL

"Spoonful" is a blues song written by Willie Dixon and first recorded in 1960 by Howlin' Wolf. Called "a stark and haunting work", it is one of Dixon's best known and most interpreted songs. Etta James had a pop and R&B record chart hit with "Spoonful" in 1961 and it was popularized in the later 1960s by the British rock group Cream.

Dixon's "Spoonful" is loosely based on "A Spoonful Blues", a song recorded in 1929 by Charley Patton (Paramount 12869),itself related to "All I Want Is A Spoonful" by Papa Charlie Jackson (1925) and "Cocaine Blues" by Luke Jordan (1927). The lyrics relate men's sometimes violent search to satisfy their cravings, with "a spoonful" used mostly as a metaphor for pleasures, which have been interpreted as sex, love, or drugs.

It could be a spoonful of coffee, it could be a spoonful of tea
But one little spoon of your precious love, is good enough for me
Men lies about that spoonful, some of them dies about that spoonful
Some of them cries about that spoonful, but everybody fight about that spoonful...

Baby, Please Don't Go

"Baby, Please Don't Go" is a classic blues song which has been called "one of the most played, arranged, and rearranged pieces in blues history"] It was popularized by Delta blues musician Big Joe Williams, who recorded the first of several versions of the song in 1935. Its roots have been traced back to nineteenth-century American songs, which deal with themes of bondage and imprisonment. "Baby, Please Don't Go" became an early blues standard with recordings by several blues musicians.

After World War II, it was adapted by Chicago blues as well as rhythm and blues artists. Later, it became a popular rock song after it was recorded by the Northern Irish group Them in 1965. Several rock performers have followed Them's updated rock arrangement, with many recordings of the song. "Baby, Please Don't Go" has been inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Amboy Dukes version of the tune is an oustanding  representation of how this song developed in the psychedelic days of the 60's. Not every garage band played this one but it was a staple by many blues based rock and rollers.

                       TOBACCO ROAD

"Tobacco Road" is a song written and first recorded by John D. Loudermilk in 1960 that was a hit for The Nashville Teens in 1964 and has since become a standard across several musical genres.

Originally framed as a folk song, "Tobacco Road" was a semi-autobiographical tale of growing up in Durham, North Carolina. Released on Columbia Records, it was not a hit for Loudermilk, achieving only minor chart success in Australia. Other artists, however, immediately began recording and performing the song.

The English group The Nashville Teens' rendering was a bold effort featuring prominent piano, electric guitar and bass drum parts and a dual lead vocal: Mickie Most produced it with the same tough-edged-pop feel that he brought to The Animals' hits. "Tobacco Road" was a trans-Atlantic pop hit in 1964, reaching number 6 on the UK singles chart and number 14 on the U.S. singles chart. While the Teens would have some further success in England, in the U.S. "Tobacco Road" became another one-hit wonder of the British Invasion.

Tobacco Road" has been performed by a great number of other artists, often with slightly altered lyrics. Notable renderings include a soul one from Lou Rawls, a folk rock one from Jefferson Airplane on their debut album Takes Off, Mind Garage, a lengthy 17-minute version by Edgar Winter and his band, a sample on dead prez's Psychology, and others from Eric Burdon & War, Spooky Tooth, Status Quo, Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Steve Young, Love Affair, David Lee Roth, Aum, Tommy Cash, Blues Magoos, Blues Creation, Bobbie Gentry, Rare Earth, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Mud an unreleased version by Jimi Hendrix, Southern Culture on the Skids, Serbian rock bands Smak and Disciplin A Kitschme, and so on. It has been done as blues, country music, punk rock, or garage rock.
