   FORTUNE TELLER

Written in the early early sixties by Naomi Neville. No relation to the Neville Brothers out of New Orleans. But indeed this was the pen name for Allen Toussaint from that same
city.

Allen Toussaint (born January 14, 1938) is an American musician, songwriter and record producer.

One of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B, many of Toussaint's songs have become familiar through their numerous cover versions, including "Working in the Coalmine", "Ride Your Pony", "Brickyard Blues", "Get Out My Life Woman", "Southern Nights" and "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky".Another was Fortune Teller, covered by many 1960s rock groups including The Who and The Hollies, and recently (2007) by Robert Plant on Raising Sand

The first version I remember hearing was the Rolling Stones cut from their Newest Hitmakers lp
I think that this song is one of those great garage type songs that so many of the early bands adopted to their own style

GLORIA

"Gloria" is a rock song classic written by Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison and originally recorded by Morrison's band Them in 1964 and released as the B-side of "Baby, Please Don't Go". The song became a garage rock staple and a part of many rock bands' repertoires. It is particularly memorable for its "G–L–O–R–I–A" chorus. It is easy to play, as a simple three-chord song, and thus is popular with those learning to play guitar. It is in OMO the ultimate garage song.

Morrison said that he wrote "Gloria" while he performed with the Monarchs in Germany in the summer of 1963, at just about the time he turned eighteen years old.] He started to perform it at the Maritime Hotel when he returned to Belfast and joined up with the Gamblers to form the band Them. He would ad-lib lyrics as he performed, sometimes stretching the song to fifteen or twenty minutes. After signing a contract with Dick Rowe and Decca, Them went to London for a recording session at Decca Three Studios in West Hampstead on 5 July 1964; "Gloria" was one of the seven songs recorded that day. Besides Morrison, present were Billy Harrison on guitar, Alan Henderson on bass, Ronnie Millings on drums and Patrick John McCauley on keyboards. Rowe brought in session musicians Arthur Greenslade on organ, Jimmy Page on guitar, and Bobby Graham on drums, since he considered the Them members too inexperienced. There remains some dispute about whether Millings and McCauley were miked up, but Alan Henderson contends that Them constituted the first rock group to use two drummers on a recording Gloria was the B-side, when "Baby, Please Don't Go" was released in the U.K. on 6 November 1964. It was re-released in 1973 on the Deram label, but did not chart

The beauty of the original is that Van Morrison needs only to speak-sing, in his Howlin' Wolf growl, "I watch her come up to my house/She knocks upon my door/And then she comes up to my room/I want to say she makes me feel all right/G-L-O-R-I-A!" to convey his teenage lust. The original Latin meaning of the name is not lost on Morrison. Them never varies from the three chords, utilizing only dynamic changes to heighten the tension.

In 1999, "Gloria" by Them received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 2000, "Gloriae" by Them was listed as number 81 on VH1's list of The 100 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time.                 In 2004, "Gloria" by Them was ranked #211 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time

                                       HEY JOE
The absolute winner of the Basic Garage Mechanics series is the all time classic HEY JOE

This song has been recorded by hundreds of artists snd every garage band had this one in their repertoire this song has been arranged in many different variations and styles,

"Hey Joe" is an American popular song from the 1960s that has become a
rock standard and as such has been performed in many musical styles by
hundreds of different artists since it was first written. "HeyJoe" tells the story of a man who is on the run and planning to head to Mexico after shooting his wife. However, diverse credits and claims
have led to confusion as to the song's true authorship and genesisThe earliest known commercial recording of the song is the late-1965 single by the Los Angeles garage band The Leaves; the band then re-recorded the track and released it in 1966 as a follow-up single which
became a hit. Currently, the best-known version is The Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1966 recording, their debut single.

The song title is sometimes given as "Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go?" or similar variations.
While claimed by the late Tim Rose to be a traditional song, or often
erroneously attributed to the pen of American musician Dino Valenti (who
also went by the names Chester or Chet Powers, and Jesse Farrow), "Hey Joe" was registered for copyright in the U.S. in 1962 by Billy Roberts.
Scottish folk singer Len Partridge has claimed that he helped write the
song with Roberts when they both performed in clubs in Edinburgh in
1956. Other sources (including singer Pat Craig), claim that Roberts
assigned the rights to the song to his friend Valenti while Valenti was
in jail, in order to give him some income upon release.Roberts was a relatively obscure California-based folk singer, guitarist and harmonica player who performed on the West Coast coffeehouse circuit.

The Sonics are an American garage rock band from Tacoma, Washington, originating in the early 1960s. Among the Sonics' contemporaries were the Kingsmen, the Wailers, the Dynamics, the Regents, and Paul Revere & the Raiders. Their aggressive, hard-edged sound has been a major influence on punk, garage, and hard rock music worldwide.

They played a mixture of garage rock standards ("Louie, Louie", "Have Love, Will Travel"), early rock and roll ("Jenny, Jenny", "Skinny Minnie") and original compositions such as "Strychnine", "Psycho", and "The Witch", all based upon simple chord sequences, played hard and fast.

The lyrics of The Sonics' original material dealt with early 1960s teenage culture: cars, guitars, surfing, and girls (in songs like "The Hustler", "Boss Hoss" and "Maintaining My Cool") alongside darker subject matter such as drinking strychnine for kicks, witches, psychopaths, and Satan (in the songs "Strychnine", "The Witch", "Psycho", and "He's Waitin'", respectively).

EARLY ELECTRONICA

Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music's true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms, and electronically generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. the Silver Apples formed in New York in 1967 and comprised percussionist Danny Taylor and lead vocalist Simeon, a bizarre figure who played an instrument also dubbed the Simeon, which (according to notes on the duo's self-titled 1968 debut LP) consisted of "nine audio oscillators and eighty-six manual controls...The lead and rhythm oscillators are played with the hands, elbows and knees and the bass oscillators are played with the feet." Although the utterly uncommercial record -- an ingenious cacophony of beeps, buzzes, and beats -- sold poorly, the Silver Apples resurfaced a year later with their sophomore effort, Contact, another far-flung outing which fared no better than its predecessor. After the record's release, the duo seemingly vanished into thin air, perhaps returning to the alien world from whence they purportedly came; however, in 1996 the Silver Apples mysteriously resurfaced, as Simeon and new partner Xian Hawkins released the single "Fractal Flow." American and European tours followed, and a year later, a new LP, Beacon, was released to wide acclaim. The follow-up, Decatur, appeared in 1998, and was soon joined by A Lake of Teardrops (a collaboration with avowed fans Spectrum) as well as The Garden, the long-unreleased third and final effort from the original Simeon/Taylor partnership. However, on November 1, 1998, the Silver Apples' van crashed while returning from a New York gig; the accident left Simeon with a broken neck and spinal injuries, from which he recovered, performing under the band name well into the 2000s.

The band OSAGE TRIBE were formed in 1971 by sicilian multi talent (composer, avantgardist, chansonier and pop singer) Franco Battiato together with drummer Ninzio "Cucciolo" Fava, guitarist Marco Zoccheddu (coming from the band NUOVO IDEA) and bass player Bob Callero. Battiato found a recording deal with the brandnew Bla Bla label but then left the band, just singing on their first single "Un Falco Nel Cielo", before starting his solo career with two albums in minmalism style; the single is rather commercial and was also used for a popular TV quiz show at the time.

The remaining trio, based in Genova, a prolific city for many great bands, veered towards a more aggressive sound and released their masterpiece, "Arrow Head", in 1972, a five tracks album that's still regarded as one of the finest in its genre. Mainly hard rock based, but with strong progressive influences rather than dull solo parts, the album has in the long "Soffici Bianchi Veli" and the softer "Cerchio Di Luce" with some jazzy influences are the best cuts.

The band had a good live activity but a short life, and Zoccheddu and Callero formed Duello Madre at the end of 1972, leaving Cucciolo with the name OSAGE TRIBE and new line-ups for a while. The drummer then joined The TRIP after their fourth album (but this line up never recorded) and then DIK DIK.

Bob Callero has had a very active career, with IL VOLO and many collaborations as sessionman.
"Arrow Head" is a particularly rare album, much requested by foreign collectors of the genre. It's never been reissued on vinyl in Italy and came with a gatefold laminated cover and the usual Bla Bla-styled lyric cutout inner. "Arrow Head" is indeed an interesting album and something like a lost gem in Italian Progressive Rock. It's highly recommended to any fan of this particular genre.
t's definitely worthwhile! (source: www.italianprog.com )

GRAN MAW MAW

I trust that everyone had a grand mother's day. Hopefully you reached out to Mom and if you are like myself ( Mom's passed on) you thought of her. In keeping with the Motherly love theme  Here's a little ditty from the Grandmothers for all'

The first version of the Grandmothers came along in 1980 and naturally featured a triumvirate that had -- among many other things weird and Zappa-esque -- been photographed wearing dresses for the gatefold cover of the 1968 We're Only in It for the Money. Drummer and singer Jimmy Carl Black, the infamous "Indian of the group," plus former Army buddies Don Preston on keyboards and multi-instrumentalist Bunk Gardner, are certainly among the most versatile and entertaining players Zappa had ever hired. Zappa himself became the target of the new band's on-stage satire and was apparently particularly upset over a dummy of himself that was being used in various provocative ways.

This began a pattern of the Zappa family and its legal minions fighting with various members of the Grandmothers. In the case of the aforementioned ribbing of Zappa it was clearly an example of something actor Edward G. Robinson described perfectly in one of his gangster roles: "You can dish it out, but you can't take it in." Other legal wranglings involved the right to perform and record Zappa compositions and, most importantly, unsanctioned use of the actual name of the Mothers of Invention by greedy promoters. At one point in the early '90s, the Zappa estate quashed a new recording deal for the Grandmothers with a major label that was unfortunately not interested in working with the band unless it was allowed to use the name of the Mothers of Invention.

Black has pointed out in many interviews that the Grandmothers are not, strictly speaking, a Zappa cover band. The group's repertoire touches only on material from the Mothers of Invention days and also features songs by Black and Preston as well as much other appropriate cover material from the '60s and '70s. Some of the membership over the years has involved players from Zappa's later bands and projects, however. Black has detailed a lively anecdote when some of these younger musicians attempted to hijack a version of the Grandmothers, their goal being to replace some of the older members with younger upstarts. "I came down to breakfast one morning in the hotel and the first thing they said," Black recalls, "was to ask 'How would you like to be the only original Mother in the Grandmothers?'" Black says he answered their question with another question: "How would you like to hang it out your ass?"

Black, usually with Gardner and Preston and sometimes with original Mothers of Invention bassist and falsetto vocalist Roy Estrada, has been responsible for the most coherent and industrious versions of the band, one of which was seen in many American towns during a lengthy tour in 2000. Black's genius in this situation was to involve the aforementioned Europeans, who brought to the stage a combination of youthful energy and a looser, much less uptight attitude about Zappa music. Black had a version of the band with local musicians based out of Austin, TX, during his residency there in the '80s, but his version of the Grandmothers only really took off after Black became an expatriate in 1992 -- allowing him much easier access to the European audience.

Since 2002, Preston has become the de facto leader of the Grandmothers, shifting the band's base of operations to his hometown of Los Angeles and utilizing musicians from this area as well as the geographically altered name of the Grandmothers .

SPEAKING IN TONGUES

As the world knows the Rolling Stones recently celebrated their 50th anniversary this past year as being the world's greatest rock and roll band. I myself prefer the early Stones work over the latter. I say that their rhythm and blues influenced LP's from 63 to 68 are my own personal favorites. I began to pay less attention to the their works after the Sticky Fingers release. The Stones to me will always be the band that included Brian Jones and Bill Wyman. I have put together a few songs that are some of own favorites with the twist that they are covered by other artists.Of course they have that 24hrdejavu touch about them.I would say the greatest tribute to any musician would be when other artists play your music. Some of these versions are quite good and many have a unique presentation. The Stones have given us some truly great songs in their 50 year history

So as I mentioned in the previous posting, I felt that the Stones early LP's were by far my own personal favorites and still are. It was part of the Stones roots to play American Rhythm and Blues material. It was very common that that would play the music of Otis Redding, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, among so many others. Here's some of that music that influenced their style in the early years

Detroit hard rockers Frijid Pink formed in 1967, originally comprised of singer Thomas Beaudry (stage name Kelly Green), guitarist Gary Ray Thompson, bassist Tom Harris, keyboardist Larry Zelanka, and drummer Richard Stevers. After two years of relentless touring throughout the southeast Michigan area, the group -- substituting Harris with Beaudry on bass -- signed with the Parrot label in 1969. Although their first two singles, "Tell Me Why" and "Drivin' Blues," failed to attract much attention, their third effort for the company -- a distorted, guitar-heavy interpretation of "The House of the Rising Sun" -- reached the Top Ten on the U.S. pop charts, becoming an even bigger hit overseas. Frijid Pink's self-titled
debut LP followed in 1970, as did the follow-up Defrosted; subsequent singles including "Sing a Song for Freedom" and "Heartbreak Hotel," however, failed to match earlier successes, and after 1972's Earth Omen the group did not reenter the studio until recording 1975's All Pink Inside,
disbanding soon after.
Another version of the band (featuring no past members) formed in 2001. They recorded one album, Inner Heat, which was set for release in 2002, but was pulled by the record label, Dynasty Records. In 2005 yet another lineup formed featuring most of the original members; drummer Stevers had succeeded in getting bassist Tom Harris and vocalist Tom Beaudry together with guitarist Steve Dansby (from a late 1970s line-up of Cactus) and keyboardist Larin Michaels. In late 2006, after a failed attempt to once again reunite the original members, Stevers began auditioning guitarists for the reformation of
Frijid Pink. A keyboard player was also brought in, recruited by Stevers from an Oldies cover band they had played in together, and from which Stevers had recently resigned. Over the course of the next five years, this new lineup would play a dozen or so gigs, such as local venues and street fairs, but never had any steady work or did any touring. The focus would eventually shift to basement recordings and
album, available in the U.S. as an import, is a mix of re-recorded songs from the group's previous albums and new original music. In late 2011, the lead singer/guitarist/engineer and the keyboard player were replaced, which ended the longest contiguous line-up in the band's history. Recording work continued with this latest lineup, and an EP was released in late Spring of 2012.

Progressive rock outfit Gypsy began its existence as the Minneapolis-based pop band the Underbeats, formed in 1964 by guitarist James Johnson, bassist Doni Larson, and drummer Tom Green.
subsequent addition of singer/guitarist Enrico Rosenbaum, the group regularly performed throughout the Twin Cities circuit, scoring a handful of local hits including "Footstompin',""Annie Do the Dog" and "Book of Love." Keyboardist James "Owl" Walsh was recruited after Johnson was drafted for military service in 1969; upon his discharge, Johnson returned to the Underbeats lineup, and the quintet relocated to Los Angeles soon after, where they landed a gig as the house band at the famedWhiskey-a-Go-Go. Rechristened Gypsy, they began pursuing a heavier, more complex sound inspired by the rise of British progressive rock, though often compared to the music of Santana. After replacing Green with drummer Jay Epstein, the band signed to the Metromedia label, issuing their self-titled double-album debut in 1970 and earned considerable FM airplay with the tracks "Gypsy Queen" and "Dead and Gone." Larson and Epstein exited Gypsy prior to recording the follow-up, 1971's In the Garden, cut with bassist Willie Weeks -- who later resurfaced in the Doobie Brothers -- and drummer Bill Lordan. Randy Cates assumed bass duties for 1972's Antithesis, Gypsy's first album for new label RCA; however, upon releasing 1973's Unlock the Gates, the group dissolved, reforming just long enough to play the Super Jam '77 concert at St. Louis' Busch Stadium. A year later Walsh formed a new Gypsy lineup, issuing The James Walsh Gypsy Band on RCA to little notice; in 1996 -- once again the sole original member -- he assembled
another Gypsy unit, releasing 20 Years Ago Today. While Lordan went on to play with Robin Trower, Rosenbaum died September 10, 1979 after a long battle with drug abuse; he was just 36 years old.

MIDDLE FINGER FAME

Loose Gravel was formed in San Francisco, California, USA, in the early-70s by Mike Wilhelm (guitar/vocals; ex-Charlatans), Kenny Sreight (bass) and Gene Rymer (drums). The line-up also sometimes featured Chris Wilson, later of the Flamin’ Groovies. Several tracks they recorded between 1971 and 1972 were later released on Wilhelm’s self-titled debut, eventually issued in 1976. These included a searing version of ‘Styrofoam’, later popularised by pub-rockers Ducks DeLuxe. Michael Deryckx (bass) and Rol Gjano (drums) then joined Wilhelm and together they recorded two privately-pressed singles, ‘Frisco Band’ and ‘Gravel Rash’. However, Wilhelm folded the band in 1976 when he joined the Flamin’ Groovies. He remained in the line-up for seven years, after which he resumed a low-key solo career that included the album Mean Ol’ Frisco in the late 80s. Loose Gravel’s Thanks For The Memories meanwhile combines three studio tracks with a live set recorded at the Coffee House, Long Beach, California, in 1976.
Wilhelm famously gave Bill Graham "the finger" in the movie Fillmore, when Graham refused to let Loose Gravel perform in the film. Graham liked the scene where Mike gave him the finger so much that he left it in the movie. Loose Gravel only released one single during their existence, but there have been several subsequent issues of material.

A few posts back I did a comp themed around Rain. It was received by you all pretty well and I had fun researching the tunes to put on it. As with each compilation I am sure I miss( sometimes purposely) some of the selections that are obvious. That is what makes it interesting to do the comp. I listen to music all the time and sharing my selections with you is fun. I try to put unusual songs in the mix as well as recognized ones. And as always there are "24" in each volume.  I have a few ready to post and the theme with this one is the Sun. Choosing the 24 songs makes the listening more interesting and provides you with a much better variety . You can hear some really unusual songs as well as some favorites.
